Who approves a new college or trade school in Maine?

In Maine, most private trade and career schools need a proprietary school license from the Commissioner of Education at the Maine Department of Education (Maine DOE), and a new degree-granting college needs an Act of the Maine Legislature on the Maine State Board of Education's recommendation.

AEC doesn't issue Maine approval and can't promise one. The Maine Commissioner of Education decides a proprietary school license, the Maine State Board of Education decides an out-of-state college's approval, and only an Act of the Maine Legislature grants a new college degree authority.

AEC's founder, Dr. Ramin Golbaghi, went through these approvals as a school owner. He founded and led a private postsecondary school, he personally obtained state approval to operate, ACCSC institutional accreditation, Title IV certification, VA education benefits approval, WIOA/I-TRAIN workforce eligibility and SEVP certification.
